Alexandr Pushkin Museum

The great Russian poet A.S.Pushkin” was sent into exile to Moldova for a period of 3 years. On September 21, 1820 he reached the capital of Moldova, Chisinau, and settled down in the house of General Inzov (today a museum). During these 3 years the poet wrote the following poems: "The Gypsies", "The Black Shawl", "To Ovid", "The faithful Greek woman does not cry", the first episode of the famous poem “Eugene Onegin”, etc., which are universally valued.

The Museum of Ethnography and Archaeology

The first archaeological exhibition was set up in 1958 in the Academy of Science in Moldova. In 1977 over 800,000 objects, including 10,000 items from the major stock, were stored in a XIXth century building (A. Bernardazzi – architect) in the centre of the capital. Today it is situated on Banulescu – Bodoni, 35 str. Walking through the museum galleries you pass through different ages, such as: palaeolithic, mesolithic, neolithic, copper and stone, bronze and iron ages in the territory between the Nistru and Prut. The decorated panoramic views designed for the visitors are most impressive.

Museum Complex “Medieval Town of Orhei”

Old Orhei is a museum complex that presents the remains of different civilizations established between the Nistru and Prut rivers. It is situated 60 km from Chisinau in a narrow, rocky, 150-200 m deep bend in the Raut River valley. The remains of the first human settlement can be found in the cliff caves. Up on the top of the cliff there was a strong fortification (V - III c. BC) built by the Geto-Dacian people, who had their own unique calendar at that time. Among the fortification ruins one can find the site of this ancient calendar, which also had the role of an altar for religious purposes common among those ancient communities. On the opposite side of the river one can distinguish the ruins of the "New town" of the Golden Horde called Sheihr-of Gedid (XIII-XIVc.), which according to researchers is considered to be one of the Tartars’ capitals during their expansion into Europe. After Moldavian solders regained these territories a new fortified stone fortress (XVc.), named Orhei, was built.

National History Museum of Moldova

Over 263,000 exhibits, 165000 of which belong to the national heritage, are exhibited in the National Museum of History, founded in 1987 on the former Regional Lyceum. It is situated on 121a, 31 August 1989 str., in the historical center of Chisinau. In the museum yard there is a statue of a Roman She-wolf with Romulus and Remus, the copy of the one in Rome. Every year almost 15 exhibitions are held in the museum; which are important events in Moldova. The museum is structured into many scientific sections: Ancient History and Archaeology, Medieval History, History of Basarabia, Contemporary History, Treasures.
The museum has 5 branches: Exhibitions of Military Technology, The Sciusev House and Museum (both in Chisinau), The C.Stamati House and Museum (Ocnita), Lazo’s Manson (in Piatra), Carol the XIIth’s House and Museum in Varnita.

The Museum of Ethnography and National History

In October 1889 Baron A. Stuard founded the oldest museum in Moldova, which during the XX century was a research laboratory for many famous scientists like: F. Osterman, S. Milec, F. Porucik, I. Suhov, B. Tarabuchin, M. Pocoara and others. The museum was built in 1901 in the oriental style, thus being a unique building of this kind in Moldova. The Museum is known for its rich geology, ethnography, palaeontology, zoological, entomology, archaeology and numismatic collections. The museum, through history, has kept its two specific directions: Nature and Cultural Studies of Moldova - that’s why it was named as the National Museum of Natural History, Regional Museum of Basarabia and The National Museum of Studies of the Republic. Now, next to those 10,000 objects in this collection, visitors can see the whole skeleton of a Dinosaur Gigantisimus, famous archaeological treasures, Basarabian national carpets of the XIX century and much more.
