Transportation
Moscow Metro
Moscow offers virtually all types of public transport: subway (underground), buses, trolley buses and trams. The most widely used is underground or metro. To ride the Metro you first have to buy a ticket, which costs 10 rubles. You can also find tickets good for several trips; these are generally cheaper overall with each ride costing as little as 4 rubles. The cost of a trip does not depend on how far or how long you are travelling. You can get to any station in the Metro system with a maximum of two transfers. All Metro stations have a police unit and an emergency medical point.
It will be fun for you to travel by metro. Take a Russian lady as a guide and the trip will more exciting. The Moscow metro system abounds with magnificent architecture, elegant designs and a lavish and profuse use of marble, mosaics, sculptures and chandeliers.
Taxis
Moscow has fleets of taxicabs just like every other major metropolis in the world! Some are yellow, some black, some just ordinary little Russian-made Ladas with a "taxi" sign stuck on their roofs, others are luxurious Mercedes, BMWs and Audis.
Another way to go if you really want to save money, and if you know a little bit of Russian, the current rates, and are in a hurry, is to try to flag down any car on the road by sticking your hand out. Regular drivers "chastniki" or "gypsy cabs" with spare time on their hands and thin wallets are very happy to earn some extra money and take you where you need to go.
Just be careful if you choose the "gypsy cab”. Please never step into a "gypsy cab" if there is more than one person (the driver) in the car. And if you have luggage in the trunk of the car, they also suggest that you wait until the driver has opened the truck and started handing you your luggage before you get out of the car.
And at last if you don't enjoy cab rides and prefer the freedom of your own wheels well why not rent a car while you're in town!
Intercity travel
If you would like to go somewhere outside of Moscow , for example to Tver, you can get there by different means of transport.
First, you can go by taxi. It is not cheap ($50-60) however fast and safe.
You can also go by train. It is also safe and very cheap ($3 for one way ticket).
For example if you are going to Tver you should catch a train which departs from Leningrad Train Station Leningrad Station is situated on the northern edge of the Garden Ring and is the terminal for all trains to and from St. Petersburg and northern Russia. The station is served by Komsomolskaya Metro station and stands on Komsomolskaya Square , next to Yaroslavl Station and opposite Kazan Station.
Address: Komsomolskaya Ploshad 3
Telephone: ( 095) 262 9143 / (095) 262 9876
The third way is to travel by bus, which also inexpensive and convenient and safe.
