Late Summer Tour 2005 August 4 - 13
The evening light shone on my face and I realized that the train would soon reach Odessa, thoughts swirled in my mind. Odessa's reputation as a health resort dates back to the 1920's. Today numerous resorts attract hundreds of thousands of vacationers and medical patients yearly who seek health and beauty in hydro and mud treatments. But that was not the purpose of a group of American men who were to arrive in Odessa on Thursday afternoon. The city of Odessa as if it were a precious gem boasts of its women’s beauty and charm and the tour customers came to see that for themselves.
Odessa is the most cosmopolitan city this side of the Black Sea. Ships from all over the world call at its port. That is where we arrived after meeting the group at the airport. Odessa hotel like another ship took its place at the pier. The view from the room was magnificent and the tour customers claimed they could not have desired any more than that.
After the orientation we headed to the Steak House, a restaurant in Deribasovskaya. The place was full and we, the tour assistants, were glad we had booked the tables beforehand. It was an interesting evening with the customers, getting to know each other, life in Odessa and the ironies of life in the newly independent state of Ukraine. Certainly, we couldn’t do without questions about the women and cultural differences. The guys were amazed how friendly and approachable the locals were. We had quite a few drinks and great laughs.
As usual Anastasia web offered its tour customers three socials, two in Odessa and one in Nikolaev, to meet the women they’ve been corresponding with or just to get acquainted with those they’ve just met. The turnout of the ladies proved to be good – more then 750 in three days. Some men complained it was too much – they were definitely not ready to see so many beautiful women in such a short period of time. The boat trip after the second social was one of the memorable events. The chilly wind was our men’s ally as it made the women sit closer to them. If only you could see the smug faces of the guys! I’m sure it was like a dream land for a good man!
Arcadia is the most well-known and popular beach in Odessa. It looks great in summer - shady trees, numerous restaurants, cafes and bars with tidy sea view terraces. There are also many outdoor nightclubs and discos by the beach in Arcadia. It is the prime place for entertainment and nightlife. Surely, outdoor Arcadia clubs were top notch for the guys. They and their dates had so much fun dancing, even in the rain.
Walking around Odessa was a pleasant experience for the tourists as well. Lots of grand old buildings and public sculptures. Leafy avenues sheltered the strollers from the summer sun. Lots of small summer cafes where one could sit and admire the beauty of the day and women passing by. At night one was captivated by the splash of the waves, seagulls’ cries and sunsets. What a wonderful scenery for dating!
When the tour came to an end the air was saturated with sadness. Neither men nor the tour staff wanted to leave Odessa. On my way back to Moscow I was turning the events of the tour in my mind over and over again and could not get rid of one thought. It’s amazing how the internet has brought the world closer than ever before, and how friendships and love were struck on that tiny little screen!
